Perchance to Dream

I leaned against the doorframe and watched her asleep in our bed.  Gods she was beautiful.  She lay on her side, presenting me with the long, clean lines of her back.  I could see her tattoo, a yin yang sun positioned at the base of her spine.  The sheet had ridden down far enough to partially expose it as she tossed and turned in her slumbers.  It looked like she was having as rough a night as I was.

As I stood there and watched the slow rise and fall of her chest, all I could think is "What the hell am I doing here?”  She was so angry when I called, late again because of work.   I couldn't stay away though.  She was everything, and I had to make this right.  I moved to the edge of the bed and stopped.  She was so deeply asleep she didn't even stir. Perfect, this was going to make things easier.  Slowly, so slowly, I leaned forward, bracing my hands on the mattress.  Lightly, I ran my lips along the curve of her hip, then down to where the rays of her sun began.  I loved that tattoo. I kissed and licked my way along the strong, dark lines of it before making my way up her spine.

I could feel her start to stir beneath me.  Her breath came a little sharper, and when I came to the curve of her throat and nipped her earlobe, she gasped.  I worked my way up her neck and when I reached her cheek, she turned to me, offering her mouth.  I kissed her, and she tasted like cinnamon and peaches, and everything else good in this world.  She was mine, and I was home, and everything was going to be fine.  The kiss ended, and I looked into her eyes.

"Your late," her voice was breathy, and not at all stern.

            "I know.  Does it matter?"

            "Not right now."

She caught the back of my head and pulled me into the next kiss, deeper this time, and than I reached down to shut off the alarm clock which had just wrecked the best dream I'd had all year.  Shit.  With a groan, I looked at the time and rolled out of bed.  Time to get ready for work, and I felt like I hadn't slept at all.  Bleary eyed, I forced myself through a blistering hot shower and three cups of coffee, before piling myself into the car and heading out.

The store was busy when I got there.  People jostled around me as I made my way to my till after signing in. Another bright and cheerful day as a grocery store clerk, lovely.  Normally I love my job, but I was jonsing on a caffeine overdose and pissed at the world, so it was with considerable annoyance that I turned to the young woman who flagged me down to ask for help.

"Excuse me, but where would I find the frozen fish?"

            "That way, towards the freezers."

            "Thank you."

She turned to go, and I couldn't help but catch a glimpse of the tattoo her low-rise jeans displayed so well.  As she walked away from me, I was left staring at the bold lines of a black yin yang sun.  I didn't move.  I didn't breath.  Finally, I remembered where I was and got back to the tasks at hand.  It was after all a dream, right?
